Alternative Professional Learning

Alternative Call to Action

WHY

What is the purpose of professional learning?  I am sure a lot of us educators have thought this while sitting in professional developments.  Instead of us being fixated on the topic being presented, we are more focused on how much time is left before our next ten minute break.  Why is it that a lot of educators feel this way?  Professional learning can be a great tool for teachers, but if it is not presented in a way that will reach and teach others, how is it beneficial?  While school districts continue to spend thousands of dollars on guest presenters and special presentations, some of the content that is being presented may not be relevant to the school, staff and more importantly, students.  In order for professional learning to be truly effective the purpose of the training needs to reflect identical the situations schools deal with and why it is necessary in the beginning.

So what product can we expect from incorporating the 5 principles of PL?  Our goal is to work as a team to implement an ePortfolio program for all 3rd-5th grade students using a platform our district is familiar with, Google Sites. However, before doing this successfully, our educators have to be trained properly to create and use their own ePortfolios in their classrooms. Throughout the duration of this program we will have opportunities to meet to discuss the expectations for the project and provide meaningful professional learning opportunities to ensure that sessions and training are effective for all participants.  Time will be provided for educators to implement ePortfolio use in their classrooms as well as examples on how to model using ePortfolios in all 3rd-5th grade classrooms.  In order to maintain engagement in the program educators will build their own ePortfolio and have opportunities to blog.  Finally, since the ePortfolio program is for educators in grades 3-5, the program can be recommended, but not required for other grade levels or departments.  This will ensure that the program remains relevant to its specific audience.

As I began creating my presentation I thought about a lot the memorable presentations that I have seen during my teaching career.  Once I realized that I couldn’t remember any, I thought of how I could change that when given an opportunity to present for others.  I thought a lot about David Phillips' presentation Death by PowerPoint.  PowerPoint seems to be the go to presentation tool for most presenters.  And although it can be a great tool, sometimes it doesn’t seem to be utilized in a way that will truly drive home the message that presenters want.  One of the things that David Phillips highlighted in his video was 1+1=0.  Meaning that a mistake that many make is presenting a slide with sentences but also speaking at the same time.  How is the audience supposed to read and listen at the same time?  It’s about presentation appeal.  One of the things that I learned is it is more efficient to stick to keywords or phrases when presenting because your audience has a better chance of focusing on the point you are trying to make.  I took this into account when developing slides during the video when revealing the 5 principles of professional learning.  I could stand and read word for word or talk about them while expecting the audience to read and listen.  Or I could add key words and visuals that match the message I am trying to get across.

I chose Canva as a presentation tool because I felt that it would provide better ways to help engage my audience.  In my presentation I was able to use videos and pictures that described the information being presented and it ultimately proved to project a more professional product. I believe that Canva is a great tool to use to step out of the box and provide more opportunities for individuality and engagement.

In order for my ePortfolio course to be successful, it is important to have a plan in mind when building it.  You need to have set goals in mind and ways to assess if one has truly mastered the skills and techniques that should be learned.  When designing this course, I kept in mind many of the teachers I have worked with in my teaching career.  These teachers came from all walks of life and are great teachers.  However, as we know in the education field, it is constantly evolving.  Teachers and strategies that were considered innovative eventually become a thing of the past if we don’t evolve with the times.  By introducing this course, I feel that I have a way to educate teachers who may have missed out on technology opportunities while also helping the “techy” continue to adopt a growth mindset and build on what they already know.  I’m willing to bet that even as the instructor of this course, I will learn a new thing or two as well!

5 Key Principles of Effective Professional Learning

Duration: In order for professional learning to be effective participants need time to learn and implement the strategies that have been presented.  In the Showcasing the Journey online course participants will receive ongoing training and support throughout the course.  While participants will be expected to complete their own ePortfolio, in-person support and guidance will be available during learning sessions.

Support During Implementation:

Support is imperative for participants in order to ensure the success and effectiveness of professional learning.  As teachers deal with continuous challenges and speed bumps throughout the implementation process, it is the facilitator’s role to provide continued support through the process. One of the main ways that the facilitator will offer support will be through a “Participant Lounge” on the Google Classroom.  This will serve as a place where participants could post questions and ask for help with certain tasks related to the PL.  Participants will also be encouraged to fill out a support request form if they are in need of in-person support.  If participants recognize that support is available, they will be more open to asking for help. While also receiving support from the facilitator, participants will receive support in the form of feedforward from their own cohorts.

Engagement: Participants will need to be actively engaged in order for the professional learning to be effective.  Participants will continuously build onto their ePortfolio throughout the course.  Weekly tasks will be assigned to the participants that will allow them to take ownership of their own ePortfolio and strategies.

Modeling: Modeling is one of the biggest keys to ensuring the PL is effective.  Participants need to see how strategies are used in real life situations.  Facilitators will continuously model activities in person and provide support and feedforward as needed.  As the facilitator continues to model their strategies, participants will see the process and purpose of ePortfolios while also seeing the expectations embedded into the course.

Addressing the Concepts

How will I foster collaboration?

In order to foster collaboration weekly online discussions will be utilized during the course.  The facilitator will encourage the use of feedforward in order for participants to build on high quality characteristics of their ePortfolio.  As learning sessions will be in person, it is imperative for the facilitator to provide continuous modeling and examples for participants to follow.  The facilitator will do this by focusing on key parts of the course and providing video or real-time examples.

Who is leading?

I plan to lead the course as the instructor.  During this course I plan to facilitate and lead group discussions and activities.  My goal is also to utilize help from on campus technology specialists and administrators when teachers begin implementing ePortfolios into their own classrooms.

My audience & their needs

The audience will be 3rd-5th grade teachers, campus instructional coaches, and administrators.  The materials that are required for participants to have are district issued Chromebooks/or personal devices, materials that can be uploaded onto their ePortfolio, and allotted time in their weekly schedule to complete modules and work on their ePortfolio.

Resources Needed to Ensure Success:

  • District Issued Chromebook/Personal Device

  • Access to Google Classroom

  • Dependable Wireless Internet

  • Technology TEKS

  • Access to Padlet (Teachers will login through their district Google account)
